Literacy Lifelines! ![]() RAZ Kids!Your child will be able to access his or her RAZ kids account through the summer. Our subscription is only for one year so at some point in August he or she will no longer be able to log on. However, even without a username and/or password your child can still read books from the online book room through the website. We will renew our subscription in the fall and your child will be given a new username and password next year from his or her teacher.
http://www.raz-kids.com/ Visit the Reading Room this Summer! As part of our continuing effort to support your child’s reading, we will have the bookroom open on Mondays from 10:00-12:00 from June 28 through July 26 (with the exception of July 5) so your child can check out books on his or her appropriate level. Many of the books kindergarten, first and second graders read in school are not available at the public library or in commercial book stores.
Research consistently supports the importance of summer reading to maintain the gains children make during the year. Research also shows that children who do not read over the summer can lose anywhere from six months to a year of reading progress. Below are the dates. If you have any questions, please let me know. I am looking forward to seeing many of you during these summer weeks. Our theme was "Cuddle Up with a Good Book!" Our Tomcats came in their pajamas with their blankets and favorite book. We cuddled up a read while we drank hot chocolate and ate cookies. Ms. Theate opened the library so students and parents could check out books. Our focus for the evening was fluency. Mrs. Takata share some important information on how to build fluency at home. You can download her powerpoint on Building Fluency below. As always, this was a fun-filled evening focused on literacy and learning!
![]() Super Tomcats are Super Readers! We have completed our first reading challenge for the year! Our goal was to read 1 million minutes as a school in ten weeks! We worked very hard and ended up reading half a million minutes in ten weeks! The top classes that read the most minutes in each grade level were Ms. Foulk-Libby and Ms. Geary's class for Kindergarten, Ms. Irvin's class for first grade, Ms. Schuster's class for second grade, Ms. Gaudiosi's class for third grade, Ms. Womack's class for fourth grade, and Mr. Cerwinske's class for fifth grade! The class that read the most minutes in the entire school was Ms. Womack's class. They read a total of 57, 656 minutes!
![]() National Young Readers Week!On Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Tyler Elementary School celebrated National Young Reader's Day! We had over 15 volunteers from the community visit our school and read to our Tomcats! The students loved having a guest reader visit their classroom! In addition to our guest readers students and staff celebrated by dressing up as our favorite book characters! It was a wonderful day focused on literacy and learning!
